Lecture

Lords of the Slop: The Return of the Kings (or why the history of the Internet is not a hero’s journey)
with Marloes de Valk (in English)

Friday, October, 9, 2026, 7 p.m.

If there were one ring to rule them all, it would not be a webring. This online tradition of creating a circle of websites that each point to the next one to help curious netizens discover a whole community of like-minded people is about discovery and generosity, not domination and control. The tech billionaires that own large parts of how most of us experience the Internet share a passion for Lord of The Rings. However, from the perspective of many end users, they seem to have mistaken the bad guys for the good ones. The smoke spewing from data centre generators reminds of Mount Doom, the pervasive surveillance of users of Sauron’s all seeing eye, the highly addictive design of social media makes people cling to their precious (phones), never mind the military application of AI to automate war. No matter how badly tech CEO’s would like to cast themselves as the heroes, the history of the Internet is not a hero’s journey, but a carrier bag containing a network of networks, some abandoned some under construction and many offering less damaging and dystopic means of communication than the Lords of Slop.
